Street sweeping information

Previous Page

The City of Murrieta Street Maintenance Department is responsible for ensuring street pavement, street curbs and gutters, asphalt roadways, concrete sideways, striping, traffic control signs, storm water drainage, litter control, and special events.

In carrying out the above objectives, this Department ensures that the NDES (National Pollutant Discharge Ellimination) program is implemented by the City. This is an important enviromental requirement that all cities must adhere to in order prevent urban runoff and maintain clean oceans.

Weekly Street Sweeping occurs between the hours of 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. (Monday – Friday) on specified residential roadways and major arterial roads. Check the route map for your immediate neighborhoods' designated Street Sweeping time-frame. Street maintenance service does continue on Holidays, and generally follows the day after trash collection every other week.

Automotive vehicles should not park on the curb during the specified time frame that the sweeping service is expected to occur. The City of Murrieta currently has no immediate plans to enforce the "no-parking" during Street Sweeping service, however, at some future time and upon such enforcement, this action would support city revenues.

Street Sweeping FAQ (Frequently Asked questions) :

Why is there no parking allowed for a four-hour period on street sweeping days?

No parking on certain designated 'route streets' allows Street Sweeping crews to more efficiently accomplish their tasks. Although not currently enforced, The City of Murrieta at this point only recommends that automotive vehicles do not park on certain streets during Street Sweeping time frames (as listed on route map & schedule).

Can I park after the Sweeper has swept the street?

It is advised that designated 'route streets' be free of automobiles during the time frame, however, this is only a recommendation. All relevant streets have posted signs indicating the street sweeping days. Every public street and major thoroughfare is swept regularly.

When will my street be resurfaced?

All City streets are rated on their present pavement condition. There is a Pavement Management Master Plan that prioritizes each street based on the pavement conditions, the available budget, type of use, and the amount of daily traffic flow. Typically, main streets and secondary collectors receive a higher priority for pavement resurfacing than residential streets.

What is the NPDES program?
The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program was established as a result of the Federal Clean Water Act of 1987 and is administered by the City's Engineering Department. The purpose of the program is to prevent urban runoff pollution and keep our rivers and ocean clean. Among other things, the City's Stormwater Ordinance and best management practices require all construction projects to prevent stormwater pollution as stipulated in the latest version of the NPDES Permit.
