Incident Summary

On August 9, 2009, a Rolex watch valued at over $6,000.00 was stolen from a Murrieta residence while the owner was away on vacation.  The owner's 19 year old son was left at home to care for the house while his parents were away.  The 19 year old son invited several friends to the house for a party.  The home owner, upon returning home from his trip, found that his Rolex watch had been stolen from the master bedroom dresser drawer.

One of the subjects, a 17 year old minor, who attended the party, stole the watch from the dresser.  The minor juvenile claimed he found s Rolex watch at the beach.  The minor photographed the watch he claimed to have found and sent the photo to a friend.  The minor told his father he found the watch.  The watch was appraised as an authentic Rolex watch and sold to Wimpey’s Pawn Shop in Murrieta for $3,300.00.

The pawn shop owner purchased the watch without following the laws that apply to a secondhand dealer and did not complete the proper paperwork involved in such a sale.  The investigation was turned over to Detective Haddad who seized the watch as evidence from Wimpey’s Pawn Shop.  The sale of the watch was captured on the Pawn Shops video camera.

Juvenile suspect was questioned regarding the theft of the watch.  Juvenile initially lied about the theft of the watch.  The juvenile suspect was presented with the photo he took and the pawn shop video sale of the watch and admitted to stealing the watch.  The juvenile suspect was taken into custody for 487 PC Grand Theft and booked into juvenile hall.

Wimpey’s Pawn Shop was found to be in violation of laws pertaining to secondhand dealers and pawn shop and an investigation is being conducted into those violations.
