Electronic Waste (E-waste)
|
Don’t throw away that old computer or monitor, it has hazardous components that are not allowed in the landfill. E-waste includes products made with Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT’s), which contain high levels of lead and are no longer accepted at the landfill. Other products containing hazardous electronic materials may include: televisions, hi-fi stereo equipment, VCR’s, DVD’s, cell phones, computer CPU’s and all types of monitors.
Because these items cannot be disposed of at the landfill, the hauler must make separate arrangements for collection. Once the item is collected it is shipped to a deconstruction site where it is stripped of all contaminants and then sent to the landfill. The contaminants are sent to a hazardous waste processing plant to be properly disposed of.
If you have e-waste to be disposed of, contact any of the following:
- Waste Management (800-423-9986) for curbside pickup
- Gold’N West Surplus, Inc. (951-340-1501) to drop off items in Corona (fee charged per diagonal screen.
- Students In Free Enterprise(SIFE) (951-785-2255 / 909-785-2255)
(call for disposal information) |
Medical Waste
|
Diabetics and others, who rely on injected medications, must dispose of used medical equipment in an environmentally responsible manner. Please visit the Riverside County Environmental Health Department’s website for guidelines relating to medical waste disposal. |
Landfill Locations
|
Several landfills are available for your direct disposal needs. Most landfill operating hours are Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. For fee and disposal information contact the landfill directly. Landfill information and directions can be found here. |

Start an Office Recycling Program!
- Designate an office Recycling Coordinator:
Select a coordinator to oversee your recycling program. The coordinator is responsible for arranging collection, encouraging employees to recycle and monitoring the recycling program
- Arrange for collection.
Several collection options are available: contact Waste Management (800-423-9986) for collection; designate an employee to deliver your recyclables to the nearest Murrieta recycling center; or consider allowing your janitorial staff to keep the CRV in exchange for collecting the recyclables – a win/win scenario.
- Get recycling bins.
Contact Waste Management about your new office program and the need for bins, or purchase bins for multiple locations in your office or transform some existing trash cans into recycling bins – now that’s recycling.
- Identify CRV recyclable beverage containers.
Educate employees on the various beverage containers in the CRV (California Redemption Value) program. From water bottles to iced tea, sports drinks and soda containers…let your employees know what can be recycled.
- Location, location, location.
Generate maximum participation by placing recycling bins at each break area, workstation, office, and cubicle.
- Make it easy – Label the bins.
Label recycling bins to indicate what items go in which bin. Most aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers can be recycled and redeemed for cash at certified recycling centers.
- Kick-off the recycling program.
Announce your new office-recycling program through an event or a series of internal emails leading up to the program kick-off.
- Keep up the enthusiasm.
Create recycling incentive programs to keep employee interest. Some simple ideas include:
- Rewards for recycling. Use funds from redeemed beverage containers to sponsor quarterly office parties or “coffee breaks”.
- Recognize employees who reduce the company’s waste – “Recycler of the Month.”
- Let your customers know – distribute waste reduction and recycling tips to spread your recycling message.

Storm Water/Clean Water Protection Program
|
Since Storm Water drains are not connected to a wastewater treatment plant, pollutants that enter storm drains flow directly to our local rivers, lakes and streams – untreated. Please help keep our waterways free of pollution by keeping harmful materials out of the storm drain.
The illegal disposal or dumping of waste into the storm drain is a serious problem. State laws and local ordinances strictly prohibit dumping of harmful pollutants into the storm drain system or local waterways.
Preventing pollution is much easier and less costly (for taxpayers) than cleaning up after contamination. Please follow these guidelines to help protect the health and safety of our communities:
- Never dump anything into a storm drain
- Promptly repair leaking automobiles
- Use cat letter or other absorbent material to clean-up spills from paved surfaces
- When using water-based paints, clean brushes in a sink.
- Pick up animal waste and dispose of it in trash cans
- Try less toxic alternatives for the garden (Call 800-506-2555 FREE home garden guide)
- Use self-service car wash facilities or wash cars on grassy areas
- Keep all trash, green waste and construction debris out of the gutters and storm drains
For more information on the program and other resources, contact the Storm Water/Clean Water Protection Program at 800-506-2555. |
Construction & Demolition Debris
|
The city is concerned about illegal hauling activities that usually occur on construction sites. The unlawful hauling of construction and demolition debris to the landfill is a detriment to the city’s recycling and diversion efforts. Murrieta Municipal Code states that all owners of properties must have disposal service and that the service should be obtained through the City or that of its designated franchise hauler – Waste Management. The law was established to help the city meet state mandated recycling goals.
Since most construction and demolition debris may be recycled, the city is working in tandem with Waste Management to assure that all reusable and recyclable construction & demolition debris is diverted from the landfill. Contractors and developers can set up service at any job site in Murrieta by contacting Waste Management (800-423-9986). |
Recycling Wireless Technology
|
New Rule to Spike Cell Phone Tossing - Washington, D.C. -- A new rule taking effect Nov. 24 will allow cell phone users to keep their phone numbers if they buy new cell phones or switch providers. News sources are reporting that this will result in accelerated cell phone disposal in landfills during the next few months. To anticipate the e-waste glut, the wireless industry has launched a web site offering recycling tips to consumers. Another site listing collection locations can be found here. |
